Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and many people are going to send out to their lovers flowers, cards and chocolates. On February 14-the everything is hearts, rainbows and majestic unicorns. In a short story we are about to tell you where this feast of St. Valentine originated.
The legend tells that in the 3-rd century in Rome, there was a priest by the name Valentine. He performed secret marriages for young men and women, who were in love. Marriage for young men was forbidden at that time, because they were considered better soldier when not married. Despite the order, the priest kept helping the desperate lovers. Later on, his actions were discovered and he was sentenced to death by Emperor Claudius II. The very first “Valentine” was sent by the priest, to a young girl he had fallen in love with. He wrote a letter to her just before his death and signed it with “From Your Valentine”, which is commonly used until today. This way, priest Valentine was immortalized as a Saint and a romantic figure.
At first people followed his steps and started sending handwritten letters to the closest of their heart. The tradition of making big gifts and sending flowers is a new trend and it has big popularity in Europe and North America.
And even that is sweet to have a day when we can proudly say we are in love with someone, at the end of the day if we love, we can show affection every day of the year. So don’t be afraid to surprise your love birdies with the good old red rose, even if it’s not February 14-the.
