The Language of Flowers: The Meaning of a Petal

As great appreciators of beauty, sometimes we get lost in all the splendor of flowers and what to pick when gifting others, sometimes it seems any flower will do. Were you aware that there was a language of flowers and that each flower may possess a special meaning and purpose? Tradition has paved the way for each flower’s association, not that you cannot march to the beat of your own drum, but why not inform yourself on some of the classic purposes of the different vegetation that blesses this earth?

In the time of Oscar Wilde, the language of flowers was an extremely relevant topic amongst social circles. In fact, just for the mere purpose of arousing interest, Wilde would wear a green rose in his jacket so that people may be intrigued by its obscure meaning…he said it generated stimulating conversation.

All sorts of foliage may be associated with a particular meaning. For example:

Lavender: Purely scented lavender is a symbol of great devotion and cautiousness.

Peony: The peony has different meanings depending what region you may be in; in China, where there is much art commemorating its beauty and was often featured as an imperial flower in the royal gardens, it is a sign of prosperity, good fortune, and honor. Yet in Japan, the peony is recognized with themes of bravery and fearlessness, it is, in fact, a masculine flower. That may seem oxymoronic, but a study of flowers and their role in our lives will speak otherwise!

Bells of Ireland: A beautiful addition to arrangements that has such a unique shape to entertain the eye, these gorgeous flowers are known for their luck. Include them for quite the surprise, as they pair magnificently with other flowers.

Peach blossom: You may know many things made out of peach wood such as beautiful bracelets that have that slight and delicate aroma and are perhaps blessed enough to have a peach tree within your range. Were you aware that the peach blossom indicated hope for marital success, especially from the bridal perspective, prosperity, and a fulfilling (as well as long) life?

We have more interesting floral meanings coming your way.
