The Traditional Lily

Chocolate bunnies, Easter egg hunts, and sunrise church services are Easter traditions, and in the flower world, the Easter lily is the traditional flower. Considered a symbol of purity, hope and life, the large, white trumpet-shaped flowers of Easter lilies grace the sanctuaries of many churches and homes on Easter. In fact, about 13 percent of the year’s floral purchases are made for Passover and Easter with lilies leading the list of most sought after flower.

The Easter season is filled with legends and folklore about the lily and its religious significance. The lily is the traditional flower of Easter and is regarded as a joyful symbol of beauty, elegance, spirituality, and hope. In Christendom the lily has come to symbolize the resurrection, but did you ever wonder about the history and significance of this symbolic flower which adds elegance and fragrance to millions of homes and churches during the spring time?

Louis Houghton, a World War I soldier, is the one to thank for the popularity of the lily. In 1919 he brought a suitcase full of lily bulbs to the southern coast of Oregon and gave them to family and friends. The Oregon climate was ideal for growing this lily, a native of the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, and by 1945, thousands west coast growers were producing bulbs for the commercial market.
