Flower Legends

As we talked about the Legends of Valentine’s Day, we must continue with the interesting stories. Almost everything in the world has mystical stories behind itself so does flowers. For example the Daisy is known for springing from Mary Magdalene’s tears. It is also known as the “smile of God” and “the Day eye” these names are connected with the fact that the daisy petals open and close with the sun’s rays. It is also associated with Venus, and used in love rituals like the petal plucking “she/he loves me, she/he loves me not”. In the Medieval periods white knights where wearing daisy garlands during battles honoring the Lady of their heart. There are flowers as the Lotus that is sacred to the Gods. In the Orient is believed that this flower was planted by God Brahma and is the favorite flower of Goddess Lakshmi. In Egypt, India, China and Japan people believe that the Lotus brings beauty and luck and is symbol of paradise. Another paradise flower is the Marigold which is the short name for Mary’s Gold. It is named that way because the legend tells that Virgin Mary has often worn this flower as her favorite and considered it sacred. The Violet is said to be created by Jupiter, who fell in love with Lo. In his rage to protect his lover he turned her into a young white cow and planted sheer field with violets so his love can freely feed while wondering around the Earth.
Another flower that was grown out of love is the Sunflower. The Greek Mythology tells a story of a water nymph called Clytie who was in with Helious but he wasn’t returning to her. She sat for so many days and nights watching him crossing pass the sky that she grew roots and transformed into a Sunflower. So every time Helious went up she was watching him.
The Carnation is told to be the first flower seen at Christ’s birth in Bethlehem and is symbol of the motherhood.
Countless are the myths, legends and stories about flowers and their creation. What’s left for us is to enjoy them.
