Hydrangeas also known as Hortensias are among the most popular flowering garden plants. Hydrangea flowers are produced from early spring to late autumn; they grow in flower heads at the ends of the stems. In many species, the flower heads contain two types of flowers, small fertile flowers in the middle of the flower head, and large, sterile bract-like flowers in a ring around the edge of each flower head. Other species have all the flowers sterile and of the same size. There are two flower arrangements in hydrangeas. Mophead flowers are large round flowerheads resembling pom-poms or, as the name implies, the head of a mop. In contrast, lacecap flowers bear round, flat flowerheads with a center core of subdued, fertile flowers surrounded by outer rings of showy, sterile flowers. When choosing a hydrangea it is very important to pay attention to the type of species or variety. Big leaf hydrangeas are very popular for their large colorful flowers.
Hydrangeas are wonderful plants that add excitement to the home. Many varieties are also good for cutting bouquets or for drying, and so provide year-round enjoyment. If you’ve been afraid to try hydrangeas because they seem too complicated, then reconsider.
HYDRANGEA CARE GUIDE:
As most of our Roses, and flowers we highly recommend as soon as you receive your Hydrangeas to bring them indoor as soon as they are delivered. If this is not immediately possible, make sure you place your flowers box in a cool place. Flowers should be stored at room temperature as long as they are kept away from heat or cold sources and out of direct sunlight.
When you are ready to arrange your flowers, open the box/es and begin by removing the flowers bunch by bunch. Without removing the plastic wrappers protecting the flower buds, remove all other packaging materials from the box/es.
Prepare containers/buckets by filling them with room temperature water. Immediately after your flowers arrive, pour in and mix the enclosed floral food packets provided with each flower order. The floral food has been shown to increase the life of fresh flowers by several days. Save a few packets for when you change the water in a few days.
Cut each stem one inch from the bottom. Place the flowers in water immediately after cutting them. Re-cutting flower stems from time to time is important ( every two days), as stem tips may be incapable of transporting water to the flower over time.
Be sure to remove any leaves that fall below the water line to prevent bacteria from forming. Floral food provided and enclosed with each order will also help to limit bacteria growth.
Place flowers in your prepared water-filled containers. Ideally, the plastic wrappers should be kept while the flowers are hydrating. Hydration occurs anywhere between six to eight hours.
To ensure longer lasting flowers, continue to keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Change the water and cut flower stems one inch every other day. Each time you change the water, add more floral food and be sure that no leaves sit below the water level.
With the passage of time, give your roses a “face-lift” every couple of days by gently removing discolored or drooping petals from your flowers.
