The Flower Effect: Why You See Them Where You Do

You may or may have not noticed that it is the case that whenever you walk into the grocery store, often times, one of the first things you may see are flowers for sale. From this assortment are all sorts, although not always the freshest…yet regardless of that, those flowers are there for a reason. When it comes to marketing, one of the many techniques applied is to take advantage of our biology. For example, you may enter a restaurant and notice how cold it is, leaving you with a desire to have more food in order to feel less cold.

Another likely event is to be in a clothing store, for example, that plays on our instincts such as by having dim lighting, increasing the size of our pupils and making us more predisposed to purchases by being more open…there is even purpose for why the store may smell so good. Down to the choice of employees, a lot of thought it put into the environment that you become acquainted with, all in the hopes of making it more advantageous for the merchant’s success.

The flowers at the grocery store are no exception. The sense of freshness is meant to keep you elated and perhaps wish to make particular purchases because of it. Yet it is the effect of flowers that I wish to highlight in taking note of this everyday occurrence. What is it about them? Why, they have this disposition that seems to connect us with a part of ourselves that without them it is hard to access or at least easy to forget about. So next time you are thinking of flowers, you may want to think of the flower effect, something to enjoy and take advantage of!
